Windows 2003 or Redhat Linux?
Are you confused of which hosting platform one should
you choose? Linux or Windows? Below are the major differences
between the two that you should consider in making your
final decision. In the process, we have also tried to
dispel any common misconceptions regarding these platforms.
Important:
You do not have to run Linux on your own computer in
order for you to host your site on Linux platform. The
operating system you run on your computer is irrelevant
in making your decision. This means that if you are
running Windows or Mac on your computer, you can still
choose Redhat Linux.
Ease of use:
There are no differences in terms of ease of use between
these platforms as many resources have been poured into
both Redhat Linux and Windows platforms to make hosting
as easy as possible. If you are an advanced user who
prefers to work in shell environment, then Redhat Linux
is your choice. On the other hand, Windows will be needed
if you are using Active Server Pages (ASP), ASP.NET,
ColdFusion or MS SQL.
Reliability:
The industry consensus is that Linux server is more
reliable. However, your decision should based on the
differences in features rather than on reliability.
Speed:
There is no difference in terms of speed between the
two platforms.
Functionality:
This is where Windows and Linux differ the most. The
main difference is how the end is achieved. For example,
you can choose either PHP/MySQL combination under Linux
or ASP/MS SQL combination under Windows if you need
a database driven web site. However, Microsoft FrontPage,
is supported on both Linux and Windows.
Price:
Logictron offers the same price plans for both platforms.
